On April 8th Gene Love, Director of the Beacon Rescue Mission, gratefully receives a donation from Catherine O'Dell from South River Electric "Operation Roundup" for $4,288.35. This gift will be used to fence in and prepare an area for the repair and recycling of larger donated items such as appliances, yard equipment, and building materials. This new project will provide those at the Mission an opportunity to work and raise much needed funds for operating the Beacon Emergency Shelter.

Every day we see the results of people unexpectedly losing their jobs and homes. People like the husband and wife below often find themselves completely without resources and needing emergency food, clothing, and shelter for a short time as they contact family members and make plans to re-locate. By God's grace, we are able to offer them help.......

"My husband and I found ourselves without a home. We both had heard about the mission here in Dunn NC. We put off for a few days coming up here, worried about the way things were gonna be for us. We were very wrong with our thoughts, that's for sure. The very minute we walked in we were welcome, we were treated like human beings and treated with respect and kindness. I can't thank the kind and wonderful people that run the mission enough. We are gonna be leaving today to go to Maine, and I actually hate to leave. We've made some wonderful friends and they will be missed by us dearly. Thank you again. Dan and Pat"

Jonathan Holt has begun work in our Ladies Division remodeling an old kitchenette upstairs into another sleeping area for ladies and children needing emergency shelter.  He's working on this large project to help his brother David earn his Eagle Scout badge. Here he is (below left) tearing out walls with volunteer Todd Wade

July 2009

This country, and the world, is in the midst of a severe economic crisis, and we are seeing the population at the Beacon Emergency Shelter changing to meet the needs in the community. Though there are still single men and women staying with us as they work and save money to get back on their feet, we are now housing more families (husband, wife, and children) than ever before!

There is a little apartment we built in the back of the building to house a man and wife who were working as night staff a couple of years ago. We are now using this area as an additional 'family room', where a man is now staying with his wife and 3 children. They had been renting a home in the community until the dad lost his job, and with just the mom's income they could no longer afford the rent. Staying with us in this time of crisis will allow them to save money while the dad locates a new job, and hopefully they will soon be able to move to a new home. Meanwhile, they are provided a refuge with food, clothing, shelter, and Christian fellowship with the 'Beacon' family, which you are very much a part of as you help support this ministry!

Another family with a man, wife, and 3 children is staying in our family room upstairs. The mom is working, and the dad is looking for work. They had moved in with family members from out of town, but had to leave because there were too many people staying in one home and the landlord objected. They also are living and attending church services with the 'Beacon family, as they also work toward getting their own home.

Many thanks to all of our friends in the community who bring food, fresh eggs, and garden veggies for the people here at the shelter. God bless you all as you continue reaching out to help others in need!

Last night a lady and her two small sons stayed at the Beacon Shelter, as they travelled on their way to finding a home with other family members. Today a gentleman who stayed one night after checking out of a rehab facility is on his way to Goldsboro to be re-united with his wife.

The population at the shelter changes day to day, and we're always blessed to be able to offer Christian Emergency Shelter to many people in need in our community. Thank you so much for your help and support!

God Bless Sister Brenda Johnson and all our friends at Recruiters for Christ Ministry for bringing food each week to help feed the men, women, and children at the shelter!
